Teen artist's painted plate given to Obama

Design shows Capitol, N.M. sunset

Daniella Martinez, 13, of Nambé is the young artist who painted the commemorative plate presented to President Barack Obama at a congressional breakfast in September.

The Pojoaque Middle School eighth-grader said Monday that she drew the design — a picture of the U.S. Capitol building, a New Mexico sunset and the Zia symbol with the Boys & Girls Club insignia in the middle — and painted it with acrylics. The plate was fired at the Pueblo of Pojoaque Boys & Girls Club and sprayed with a glossy finish.

She said the club was invited by the national office to make the plates and "I jumped right on it."

Daniella, a six-year member of the club, is already an accomplished sketch artist. She's drawn many pictures of Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn, and her sketch of her 7-year-old sister, Kiara, is almost an exact match, she said.

Daniella's parents provide her with sketching materials, paper and pencils. She's good enough that a number of people have invited her to sketch their children, she said, but she is "really busy with schoolwork" right now. When she grows up, she wants to become an architect.

The Pueblo of Pojoaque Boys & Girls Club made a dozen plates which were presented to the president, the first lady, the vice president, members of Congress and the administration. Daniella said that her parents supported Obama in the 2008 election and it was cool that he received her plate.

Mona Dixon, a five-year member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the East Valley in Tempe, Ariz., was named National Youth of the Year at the breakfast and is shown in the photo presenting the plate to Obama.
